~ STORY SLAM ~

Storytelling is the most powerful way
to put ideas into the world today.

Ms. Gorman was the youngest poet in U.S. history to speak at a presidential inauguration, when she recited her poem “The Hill We Climb”.

“This is something that the world needed to hear
and I needed to write.” Amanda Gorman ~

Find your voice in the ultimate artistic form of self expression! Our campers (ages 9-14) will learn how to create and write short stories & poems which are compelling, moving, and impactful! PAW’s Story Slam allows our young writers to express themselves in the most memorable way!

Learn how to write short stories and poetry at
PAW’s Story Slam Camp!
Our young writers will draw inspiration from their personal experiences, issues they are passionate about, and even current events…then write and compose their own short stories or poems to share with each other.

Our campers are provided with a safe and supportive space as they learn to draw inspiration from their personal experiences to compose their own short stories and poems…teaching them how to express themselves through the written word. They will learn the essential elements that are necessary to create an amazing short story including character, plot, setting and theme. By balancing these principles along with powerful literary elements including rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeias, similes, metaphors, repetition, personification, hyperboles, symbolism, tone, and mood our campers will take their poetry to another level as well!

Finally, our curriculum will promote the development of self-confidence through the medium of storytelling. Within each one-week session, our campers will give their written work a voice as they expand upon their public speaking skills through a series of fun vocal exercises and breathing games to enhance their diction, enunciation, projection, intent and directness while speaking! Our campers will share their stories and poems with each other at their group finale…the “Open Mic Party!”

Our campers are provided a safe and supportive space where they will learn to use these literary skills to articulate their thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and experiences in a series of written poems.  From there, our campers will give life to their written words by participating in the culminating class activity, THE OPEN MIC PARTY! Here they get the opportunity to express their poems in a spoken style with intentional body language, meaningful tone and diction, as well as personal stylistic touches.

Amanda Gorman Used Her Performance Poetry
to Correct Her Speech Disability!

Amanda Gorman, a Spoken Word Artist, was born with a learning delay that affected her speech and pronunciation. In 2017, she was named the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she explains how she used reciting her poetry to work through her challenges, “I’m really grateful for that experience because it informs my poetry,” she tells Winfrey. “I think it made me all that much stronger of a writer when you have to teach yourself how to say words from scratch. When you are learning through poetry how to speak English, it lends to a great understanding of sound, of pitch, of pronunciation, so I think of my speech impediment not as a weakness or a disability, but as one of my greatest strengths.”

“What inspires me about rap is that it's written in a poetic way.” Billie Eilish

"Spoken word poetry is the art of performance poetry...it involves creating poetry
that doesn't just want to sit on paper...something about it
demands it be heard out loud or witnessed in person."
~Poet, Sarah Kay
