~ THE WRITERS ROOM ~

If you can speak, you can write dialogue
. . . If you can imagine, you can tell a story!

Lights, Camera, Write! – Script Writing for Young Storytellers (Ages 9–14)

Do you love movies, cartoons, or plays? Ever dreamed of creating your own characters, writing hilarious scenes, or bringing an epic adventure to life on screen or stage? Welcome to The Writers Room…Script Writing for Young Storytellers!

In this fun and interactive class, you’ll learn how to turn your ideas into real scripts – just like the ones used in your favorite shows and movies. Whether it’s a comedy, mystery, superhero story, or fantasy world, you’re the writer, and your imagination is the limit.

The Writers Room is more than a camp – it’s a place where young storytellers learn that their ideas matter, their voices are powerful, and their creativity has the potential to shape worlds. Like Lin-Manuel Miranda or Shonda Rhimes, each PAW camper discovers that every great Show, Movie, or Play begins the same way: with one person daring to write the first line!

Before a camera rolls or an actor steps onto the stage, everything begins with a script. Someone has to dream up the characters, write their dialogue, and imagine the world where the story unfolds.  At The Writers Room Camp, young creatives step into that role, discovering what it means to be the voice behind the stories we love. No writing experience needed – just bring your creativity and love for stories! Whether you’re a natural storyteller or just love the idea of making something new, this class is a great place to start. Come with ideas, leave with your very own script—and maybe even the first steps toward becoming a future screenwriter.

Discover your voice in the ultimate artistic form of self expression! Throughout the week, campers explore the essential tools of a professional writer: how to build layered characters, shape stories with compelling arcs, and write dialogue that feels natural and alive. Each camper takes on two major writing projects—one collaborative and one solo. In the collaborative project, the group works together to “break” a story, brainstorm scenes, and develop a shared script. In the solo project, each camper dives into an original piece of their own, developing a personal voice and exploring their unique ideas.

By the end of the week, every camper will head home with a treasure trove of creativity, including:

    • A digital copy of their Collaborative Group Script – the epic story they helped bring to life with their fellow writers.
    • Their very own personal writing notebook, bursting with original ideas, story sparks, playful prompts, and imaginative breakthroughs from our creative writing labs.
    • The crown jewel: a one-of-a-kind keepsake – a beautifully handwritten, final version of their solo script, tucked inside a special binder to celebrate their voice and creativity for years to come.

At PAW’s Writing Room Camp, young writers are immersed in a safe, supportive, and creatively charged environment where their ideas can take flight on the page. Throughout the week, campers collaborate, create, and shape stories that are entirely their own. By week’s end, they’re invited to step into the spotlight at The Writers’ Room Showcase — a live table read of their group’s original project. Whether they choose to share their voice on stage or simply savor the journey privately, every camper leaves with a sense of pride, and the unforgettable experience of bringing their imagination to life.

The impact of The Writers Room goes far beyond camp!

These skills carry into school, where strong writing, clear communication, and creative thinking support essays, presentations, and group projects. They strengthen confidence in everyday life, from public speaking to problem-solving, as they foster empathy by encouraging campers to step into the shoes of the characters they create. The process of going from their first draft to their final script teaches resilience, showing campers that revisions & edits are simply part of the process, while collaboration in the room builds teamwork and leadership.

“Your imagination is more powerful than you think.”

Changing the world, one word at a time!

Like Lin-Manuel Miranda – who wrote the first song of Hamilton on a subway ride home – our campers learn that stories can come from anywhere. A stray thought, a moment in the day, or even a walk outside can spark something extraordinary. With guidance, support, and the fun of working alongside other writers, campers turn these sparks into scenes that come alive with humor, drama, and heart.

Do you have a STORY that needs to get out?

“The world is never the same once a good story has been added to it. A good story helps to change the shape of the universe, helps to extend everyone’s knowledge of himself and the world around him.”
